Hand-Cut Stone Lettering

We cut a house name and number into the stone of an existing gate pier, set out with a paper stencil, with a quatrefoil in each corner of the panel.

Lettering

Incised italic, quatrefoil corners

Setting out

Paper stencil

A stone gate pier at the end of a rubble wall, beside a red iron gate. Its plain stone panel carried a brass number 5 and nothing else.

We cut the house name into that panel, with a quatrefoil in each corner, and cut the number into the stone band below.

1

Before: a brass number

The pier had a plain, dark, weathered stone panel under a flat coping stone. A brass 5 was fixed to it with two screws.

Below the panel is a blank stone band. The wall around it is rubble stone with wide pointing.

Two screws held the brass 5 to the panel.
2

Paper stencil

The wording was cut out of paper first. One sheet carries the name in an italic letter, with a motif cut in each top corner. A separate strip carries the number.

The same italic letters are the ones now in the stone.

3

Cut and finished

The Parsonage is cut into the same panel, with a quatrefoil in each corner. No. 5 is cut into the band below.

The fresh cuts show pink against the dark face of the stone.

The same panel as before, with the brass 5 gone.
